DAVIS DART CHALLENGE 5K

Corbin Talley, the Davis XC coach and my former teammate at Weber, called me a few days ago and asked if I wanted to come out and run his race today. I decided it would be a decent tune-up for TOU next week and besides that I haven't raced a non-aided 5k yet this year. So, I agreed to come and run.

I showed up about 45 minutes before the start, grabbed my bib, used the restroom a few times, and warmed up just over two miles with a few strides. I got out quickly at the gun and was in 1st place by 50 meters and led wire to wire. I got out a little too fast in the first mile. I ran a 4:36 for mile one. But it felt pretty good and I thought I could hold it. I came through the halfway point, which they had marked, in 7:17. But shortly after that I started to feel the oxygen debt from the quick start and I slowed substantially. I ran mile two in 4:50 and mile three in 4:54. I ran the last tenth in 4:32/mile pace for a 14:56 finish. It was the second fastest time ever behind Jared Ward's 14:43. Davis High's top runner was second and broke the high school course record in 15:30.

I feel pretty good about the time, especially since I haven't done any 5k-specific workouts. I think if I trained for a 5k for a few weeks I could run 14:30s at altitude here. But, for now the goal is sub-1:05 in the half and that's what I'll keep training towards.

Overall, a fun race. Corbin and his people do a great job of organizing the race. The course is well marked and is fairly flat and USATF-certified. The t-shirt was a good tech tee, but the cool thing is they keep the running list of top 50 overall men and women times ever on the back of the shirt. So, next year if you're looking for a good 5k, come try this one and see if you can get your name on the shirt!

Great race, as always. You going to take another stab at a marathon this fall?

From RileyCook on Sat, Aug 15, 2015 at 11:22:27 from 73.52.134.194

Paul, I think I'm going to give a sea level half a go, shoot for sub-1:05 for an OTQ. I'm just so much better at the half than the full.

I'm running STG, but the focus is more on a fast half than it is on a fast marathon at STG. I may hit up a race next month; I have a few in mind that look flat and eligible.

Take a look at Indianapolis Monumental, Sat Nov 7. They have a fairly fast half every year, with several Trials qualifiers the last few years. Good prize money, plus a $500 bonus for sub-1:05. I'm running the full marathon.

From RileyCook on Sat, Aug 15, 2015 at 11:32:10 from 73.52.134.194

Yeah it's on my radar. Ideally, I'd like to hit an OTQ next month, then run STG, and take a few weeks off/down before a ramp up for the Trials. But we don't always live in an ideal world. If I don't have an OTQ by Nov, that will certainly be one of my options.

I think if all else fails, Houston is on the very last day to qualify and the half there would be a last chance. I feel like I'm close now, we'll see though. Next week at TOU should give me some indicators on if it's worth travelling next month to a race or not.

It's worth it Riley. You are ready to do it!

that is a great time -- nice job. now you have to go back next year to see your name on the shirt.

the dart challenge is my favorite 5k, hands down. corbin does everything right with that race.

Great work!! I am the same way, better at the half than the full. It's frustrating. Can't wait to see you qualify.

This was pretty cool to see on my Strava feed. Well done!

I think Paul's suggestion is probably better than the half in Philly. The course is likely a touch faster but not much. However, given the times in recent years you would likely be going for the win or the podium. Not sure if that would help you run faster or if you just want to run your own race against the clock. 2013 it was very fast (~63.5 minutes) and last year still fast but with 2 guys squeaking under 65.

Maybe a lot more folks this year trying to get a last minute OT qualifier.

Man alive that's what I call gettin it.

Thanks everyone! And thanks for the vote of confidence for the OTQ! I will certainly try my best to achieve it.
