Well I wasn't sure what to expect going into this race.  I had hit some good workouts, but I was also pushing my mileage to the highest it's ever been and have had fatigued legs all week.  In the end, I am quite happy with the result.  But, it was a grind today.  Never at any point in the race, even early, did I feel comfortable.  It felt hard to whole way, but I just kept at and kept grinding it out.  And now my calf muscles feel like someone hit them with a sledge hammer!

Ken and Janae were nice enough to let Ben and I stay with them at her parent's house.  So, that was nice to have a free place to stay close to the race.  It took forever to get on a bus and we didn't arrive to the start line until 6:35.  So, Ben and I found a secret bathroom to skip port a pottie lines and then got in a quick warmup before heading to the start.

The race was out quick.  Jake went hard from the get go and Ken and Jason Holt also pushed that first mile pretty hard, while Ben and I backed off a tad.

I passed Jason during mile 2 and came within 7 seconds or so of Ken.  Ken kept the gap until the end of mile 5 when I decided I needed to get up to him and start working together.  So, I did and then I pulled ahead a tad on a flat section and then he pulled ahead again on a downhill.  We didn't do much running "together" as in side by side but we did plenty of pulling and pushing and kept encouraging each other verbally.  Miles 5, 6, and 7 had a really good tailwind and then I never felt it again really after 7 (there was actually a slight headwind for the first 4 or so, but nothing too bad).

At the turn out of the canyon, I measured Jake's lead and it was 45 seconds.  During the next section Ken put about 7 seconds on me again while I backed off a tad to conserve a bit for the uphill section.

About this time my stomach started grumbling and I was scared I may need a pit stop.  As we turned to go uphill at 10.5 miles the lead was still 7 seconds.  During mile 11, the most difficult mile, Ken started to slow so I made an effort to catch him and did right at 12 and told him to hop in behind and let's go!

Ken and I were teammates and Weber and are almost like brothers.  He's the only person in the world I would encourage instead of try to break when passing at mile 12.  Ken responded and went with me. We picked up the pace and then my stomach started hurting bad again.  I had to slow down to avoid an embarassing moment and Ken got 5 seconds on me again.  Luckily the stomach pain went away and so I made a hard surge and caught Ken at 12.7 or so.  Ken turned and asked, "What's the plan? You want this one? Or are we kicking?"  I answered, "Let's finish it together."

We continued to pick up the pace and did basically a synchronized kick for the last bit.  We both finished 1:07:44 (Ken .2 ahead of me for 2nd).  It's a one second PR for me, so I am happy with that.  Ben then finished 4th only a minute back for a huge PR, I was so happy for him.  He's been wanting that sub-1:10 for quite awhile and it was sweet to see his hard work finally pay off!

It was great to see several friends and bloggers at the race!

Great race Riley! After your long run last week it's a great sign to come back with this. Your running seems to be on a nice upswing. Keep up the good work and stay healthy for that marathon.

From Andrea on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 14:10:24 from 67.177.11.154

Awesome race Riley! I bet the battle with Ken helped pushed you both to great times today. New PR, even with the increased mileage the last couple weeks!

From Tara on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 14:21:08 from 75.169.152.102

Very nice! A PR, good company, free place to stay, what else could you want today!?

From Bam on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 14:21:46 from 213.191.247.37

Great run on tired legs, Riley. In your Short-term goals, you listed 'Sub 1:09' for this race, so you should be pleased with 1:07:44! More importantly, it looks as though you are developing the necessary grit for 'racing' a marathon. Well done. A good day's work.

From Jake K on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 15:00:23 from 67.177.11.154

You gotta be pleased with this race. A really good effort and even though its "only" a 1 second PR, the TOU course is a bit more challenging than some of the other courses around. I think you can run under 1:08 on a flat course. Keep this rolling towards StG - you're due for a breakthrough marathon!!!

Awesome job Riley! Hey, remember that movie Misery when Kathy Bates hits James Caan's ankles with a sledge hammer?

Congrats on a very fine race Riley! I echo what everyone else has said. You're on a nice up swing and will be well primed for a fantastic marathon. Keep it up!

A very impressive performance today. Nice job! I especially love the 4:47 split at mile 6. A strong finish as well with legs that were not 100% today--5:05 last mile with enough energy to finish the race at 4:30 pace. Well done!

From Fritz on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 16:32:38 from 65.100.192.74

Nice job Riley. Looks like you definitely hit your goal and you are setting yourself up well for SGM. Keep it up.

Thanks everyone. It was a good race.

Derek: I am glad the legs had some life after that long run; I was getting worried on Thursday.

Andrea: Running with Ken always improves both of our times. He gets out strong and I finish strong so it's a good combo where he pulls me early and I pull him late.

Bam: Thanks. I certainly hope I am getting the grit needed to race the marathon!

Jake: You were the man today! This definitely gives me more confidence for St. George.

Burt: Great movie.

Justin: Thanks. I hope to keep up with you and Scott in the marathon!

Allie: Thanks. I was wondering why I didn't see you at the start, then I read your blog and realized you paced. Nice effort still on the pacing!

Angie: It's great having someone with almost identical fitness right now like Ken to run with!

Scott: Thanks for pointing out that nice 4:47 split, because it was a typo. It was actually 4:57; I fixed it. :) And it was a good finish, I was happy with that last mile.

Fritz: Thanks. I hope you can join us again soon on the road races.

You guys are just inspiring this year. Just as long as there isn't any hand holding across the finish line. Ever.

From Superfly on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 09:44:23 from 74.211.21.81

Great race! I think your right where you want to be coming into STG. Stay healthy and the 6th of Oct will be a day to remember.

Another awesome race. Great competition up in Logan! Congrats. See you at St. George.

Riley, It was great to meet you and congratulations on a great race. Your race report is really energizing and got my heart bounding in race mode just reading it. Sorry about the stomach issues but you held it together for a solid race.

From RileyCook on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 16:02:53 from 132.3.57.68

Steve: Don't worry, there wasn't any hand holding; that would slow us down way too much!

Clyde: This does give me confidence and I hope Oct 6 is a day to remember, but for a fast time not an epic fail! haha

Mark: Thanks. See you in St. George. It'll be a fun one.

Adam: I was great meeting you as well and nice job on your race. Hopefully I will see you more often and get to know you better.

Nice race men! And an amazing time. I hope that you are pleased with the result. ( i certainly would be ) If you keep up this level off fitness, you will go sub 2:28 at your marathon for sure! All the best in achieving your goals.
