8.25 miles on the treadmill again this morning. I tried one mile at 5:20 pace to see if the legs were ready for the scheduled workout, but decided my body was too tired still. I will give it a go tomorrow instead.

Looks like SLC Marathon changed the courses substantially from previous years:

2 races, 2 long runs, some token 400s, and a couple flights across the country in just over a week will usually leave you a little tired!

From Superfly on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 09:34:11 from 209.33.217.210

Yeah... all that and then pushing 5:00 pace on the treadmill sounds like suicide. Don't kill yourself out there. Get back home safe then let the dawgs out:).

I'm pretty proud of myself. 2013 Riley, even Dec 2013 Riley, would've tried this workout no matter what. But 2014 Riley is trying to be better at recovery and allowing adaptation to fully occur before pushing again. We'll see how well I can remain patient with this new approach.

Interesting new course. That hill around mile 1 is awful, but probably makes up for the lack of SHP (for the 1/2).

The one thing about that race is that if you win, you are almost guaranteed a lifelong course record, because they change it every year!

From RileyCook on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 13:26:43 from 64.134.38.81

@Jake, so true. They change it every year. There has to be like 8 course records already!

It's hard to say how fast this new course will run. You'd know better than me, as I'm just looking at the course profile and you are likely familiar with the area. But it appears a bit slower overall to me. For the half anyway.

From Jake K on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 13:33:40 from 159.212.71.17

I don't really know how I'd rate them... it probably isn't drastically different. The hill at 1 is steep and the hill at 6 is a GRIND. But the rest of the course is smooth and easy.

The 19 mile mark intersects my tempo loop, I don't know why they didn't ask for my approval before doing that. I can't have all sorts of random marks painted on my road! :-)

From RileyCook on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 13:51:40 from 64.134.38.81

They definitely should have asked for permission. They owe you a comp entry, appearance fees, and a higher purse!

From Jake K on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 13:59:16 from 159.212.71.17

I'll gladly decline all 3 as long as I can get out of my driveway and go skiing.

I love how all of the "course highlights" occur within the first 5 miles. That doesn't feel like the same marathon at all. Are they really going to have people running on 700 E?

From allie on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 14:36:27 from 161.38.221.168

i'm surprised by how much they changed it. no more van winkle expressway? slc. slc.

Good job at pulling the plug on the workout Riley. You've been putting in a lot of fast miles lately and running fast on the treadmill is kind of torture.

that is quite the change, much more significant than changes in years past. the full is definitely a slower course. 2004 to 2012 courses only had hills in SHP, 27th south and Keller Lane. Now there is the hill up to 11th, up south temple, 8th south, westminster, SHP, 27th and Keller Lane. It's starting to look like a real marathon course :)

From RileyCook on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 08:18:59 from 64.134.38.81

Yeah in years past the race was at least somewhat similar. But now it runs the complete opposite direction at the beginning.

Are you running the marathon Fritz? Will you get your what 3rd or 4th SLC Marathon course record with this new course :-)

From Fritz on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 09:25:43 from 65.116.116.6

I am more tempted to run it with the new course but I haven't decided yet. Despite being slower it definitely adds more variety and it shows off the city better. Even with all of the changes I don't think I hold any of the old course records. There was a 2:15 on the original, a 2:25 that I just missed on the route that went up State Street and then Bryant's run last year.

From RileyCook on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 09:29:04 from 64.134.38.81

Well the route up state street had two different finishes right? One at the Gateway and one by Energy Solutions Arena, using that parking lot for the finish area. So, I'd say you have at least the latter CR of those two :)

From Fritz on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 10:22:24 from 65.116.116.6

OK, so I guess I do hold the course record on course version 3.2 that did the weird out an back in SHP, went up state street and finished near Energy Solutions Arena. I'll take it :)

From RileyCook on Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 10:23:25 from 64.134.38.81

Haha, you'll take AND no one will ever take it from you!
