LONG RUN: 60-MIN FARTLEK IN MIDDLE

I was going to meet Bryant and Ben in West Haven at the Country Park. But both of them had to cancel at the last minute due to sicknesses to them or their family. So, I was solo. I ran out into Roy and on the way back I hit the rail trail and started my fartlek. I did 5 sets of 3-2-1 minute pickups with equal 3-2-1 minute jogs for rest. I stopped briefly back at the car to get a drink and drop off my headlamp and then continued the run out west. After the last set of pickups I had my phlegm/mucous problem, which resulted in me throwing up again. This is frustrating. I thought maybe I'd found a solution for it, but I guess not. Next step in solving it I guess is carrying water with me on my runs (which really sucks). I have to figure out why this is happening. It's worthless to even attempt another marathon until I do, since I throw up everytime I put in a hard effort over 15 miles it seems.

Average pace for the 6.15 miles worth of pickups was 4:55/mile. Average pace for the total run was 6:23/mile.

That's a great workout. I don't do enough fartleking but I plan to this winter.

This seems like a fairly recent issue. Is that correct?

I just looked it up because I also have trouble clearing fluids at times (with gels especially), but I will dispense with any computer chair medical advice.

The problem itself is not new, but it's worse this year than ever. The first time it happened was in 2011 when I dropped out of Ogden Marathon. But it used to be few and far between. Now it's basically every effort (moderate or hard) over 15 miles and shows up as early as 10 miles sometimes.

It's a large buildup of phlegm and I can't clear it, so my gag reflex kicks in, still can't clear it, and I get nauseous from gagging and eventually throw up.

I had only thrown up during running once in my life before that 2011 Ogden Marathon (but I also never did these long, sustained efforts).

I recently saw an allergy specialist (I'm very allergic to just about everything in nature) and he got me on over-the-counter Nasacort, a nasal spray for allergies and another nasal spray to use just before running that dries the nose up. I thought that was working, but I hadn't really tested a hard effort since Chicago until today. But, I'm also on the end of being sick and have had a chest cold, so I'd be more prone for it to happen today.

I don't know...Maybe dehydration. That's the next variable to change, isolate, and observe its effect I guess.
