MILE REPEATS

We had a good group to ring in the New Year with early morning mile repeats. Jason, Steve, Bret and I met at Smith's on 42nd and Harrison and warmed up just over three miles over to the tempo loop. The plan was 5xmile with 2:30 jog for rest. I ended up with more like 2:45-3:00 rest since we re-grouped after each one and made sure everyone got their 2:30 jog at least.

The first rep was more laborious than I anticipated. My goal was to average 4:50 and the first one was 4:50 right on the money, but it took a good effort. The second was a bit better in 4:47. Third rep was 4:50 and felt better than the first for the same pace. During the fourth my stomach showed up and slowed me down a tad in the last quarter mile 4:53. Luckily it wasn't quite as bad during the last one and allowed me to finish the workout. I ran 4:47 again for the last one.

With the close of 2013, I decided to do a just-for-fun 2013 Utah road racing awards. These are totally scientific and official ;-) Feel free to disagree with me and share your thoughts too. Just don't anybody take these too seriously if I overlooked somebody.

The criteria is based on racing inside the state's borders only and quality of the performances takes on a bit more weight than quantity of good performances.  There are four categories: Best overall runner, Best single race performance, Breakthrough Runner of the Year (this is someone who was good but just jumped up to a whole new level), and finally Comeback of the Year (someone who experienced a setback but came back stronger than before).

So here they are, the Riley Cook Utah Road Racing Awards for 2013:

Runner of the Year: Male - Bryant Jensen Female - Kassi Harmon. This was a tough call for both genders. When looking at a full year of racing results there are several runners that had some great races. But, Bryant had quality victories at the Strider's Half, Ogden Marathon, Utah Valley Marathon, and St. George Marathon. At first glance this makes you think this is a no-brainer. But looking at head-to-head against other top runners in the state makes it a lot less clear. Bryant was 0-3 against Jake in-state (1-0 out of state), 0-2 against Josh McCabe, 3-3 against Riley (1-0 out of state), 1-0 against Jon Kotter, 1-0 against Fritz, and 2-0 against Brett Hales. But, in the end the quality of Bryant's performances versus the rest of the guys puts him on top. Kassi had a crazy amount of first-place finishes, which also made her look like the shoe-in, but looking at head-to-head it got less clear as well. She was 1-1 against Devra, 1-1 against Christina Perrry, 0-1 against Emily, 1-0 against Sariah, 4-0 against Allie, but never faced Amber Green or Rosy Lee, which makes it tough. It was hard to count out Emily as, she only got beat at St. George Marathon I think. It's also hard to count out Amber Green who had wins at Utah Valley and Bryce Canyon and a quality runner-up at STG. But in the end the head-to-head and the quantity of big wins gives the nod to Kassi (who had an impressive non-aided 1:18 at St George Half as well).

Best Single Race Performance: Male - Bryant Jensen Female - Rosy Lee. Once again, a very tough call. Bryant's STG performance was challenged mostly by Miles Batty's Des News 10k. But in the end, the fact that Bryant broke the course record at a race that has deep fields year after year gives him the slight edge. For the women, (which I admittedly am much less knowledgable) Rosy's STG win over elite company in a crazy fast 2:37, beats out Allie's near-course record TOU win in 2:44. I think STG is a lot faster than TOU, but it's hard to say it's 7 minutes faster...like I said feel free to debate this politely. I'm interested in others' thoughts.

Breakthrough Runner- Male - Mike Nelson Female - Marilee Blackham. We knew Mike was a good runner, but knocking that much time off his STG Marathon to run 2:25 was impressive to say the least. Matt Paulsen was also strongly considered for this award, but the Thanksgiving 4-mile race in almost 20-flat put Mike over the top. For the women, it was a tough call between Marilee and Rachelle (there could be others I'm overlooking...fill me in if so), but Marilee really showed she is now a force to be reckoned with. She had good showing at Striders with a 3rd place finish (one ahead of Allie), 3rd at Ogden Marathon, 5th at STG, and 2nd to Kassi at Hobble Creek.

Comeback Runner of the Year: Male - Ben Van Beekum Female - Emily Jameson. It came down to Fritz and Ben in my mind. Both came back for PRs in the marathon at STG. But Ben's PR improvement was larger than Fritz's and he also PR-ed in the half. So very close call here and both very impressive comebacks, but nod to Ben. For women, yes I am counting pregnancy as a setback. That has to be hard to get back in shape from and Emily made it look easy with a win at Des News Half and 3rd at STG Marathon (next year the clear frontrunner right now looks to be Andrea).

So there you have it. Feel free to argue and enlighten me! But please like I said don't anyone get offended or take this too seriously. It was just for fun and I came up with it on one run without a ton of analysis.

Nice workout Riley. Good job with the RC awards. Obviously there are a ton of great runners in Utah. Looking around the blog it looks like 2014 will be the year of the aerobic builder.

Fun analysis. There were some great performances this year! Do you have trophies? :) You forgot Master's Runner of the Year. I think your wife is on track for breakthrough of the year in 2014. Her workouts have been looking awesome.

According to Sasha's handy dandy time predictor, Allie's 2:44 converts to a 2:38 on St. George. Plus, we had ideal conditions with the tail wind, so head to head . . . who knows. Both were amazing marathon performances. Yes, I came back from a baby, but Rosy's baby is only a month older than mine. Now, that's a comeback!

Thanks for taking the time to put together some Utah highlights for 2013.

Nice mile repeats, Riley!

Great analysis. Well thought-out, and well-deserved awards!

Emily thanks for the extra info. I didn't get as in depth as the race predictor but I like it. I knew those two performances were so close. Maybe we hand out two awards as a tie for that one. I also didn't know Rosy had a baby too! Very impressive.

From Fritz on Wed, Jan 01, 2014 at 14:24:14 from 50.198.178.113

Nice workout to ring in the New Year. Thanks for the call outs and for even considering me in the inaugural and soon to be Oscar quality Riley running awards. I agree with your assessments and I also think you deserve a spot right near the top for the runner of the year. Your training was incredible and you ran a ton of quality races at all distances. Wins at the TOU Half (probably the most stacked half of the year), SLC Half, handfuls of 5k and 10ks, etc.

From JPark on Wed, Jan 01, 2014 at 16:11:36 from 50.160.19.124

Very fun awards Riley. Can't really argue with any of your assessments. I agree with Fritz, you are right up there for 3 of the categories. Mike and Matt had huge breakthrough years no doubt, but so did you. You dropped your marathon time a whole bunch; your standards/expectations are just so freaking high. Jake deserves a shoot out too for what he's done and everything he contributes to the running community and this blog.

From RileyCook on Wed, Jan 01, 2014 at 16:36:57 from 174.52.81.216

Thanks fellas.

Justin, Jake was "nominated" for runner of the year. And certainly his case would be way more competitive had races outside of Utah been taken into account, as those were his strongest. Case in point, he's undefeated (2-0) against me in races outside the state. Inside Utah he is 1-4 against me. BUT the out of state ones were key races for him whereas some of the Utah ones he trained through or used as a workout. So these awards don't suit his race selection well. But yes he's a very influential runner in the state and obviously on this blog.

Great repeats and fun awards. I agree with the others in suggesting you are right there as well :). You had a very impressive year. I have to throw Zak a nod on a very impressive year and an awesome 2:21 marathon debut at St. George. So many awesome performances by a tight community here in Utah to celebrate!

From Steve Shepherd on Thu, Jan 02, 2014 at 09:12:42 from 168.180.139.110

Riley,

I feel like a freshmen in college again, just hoping that someday I'll be as fast and as cool as you are!

From Rachelle on Thu, Jan 02, 2014 at 11:43:14 from 159.212.71.77

Awesome mile repeats Riley. I really enjoyed your awards and your analysis - very thought out. We have so many awesome runners in UT and it is kind of awesome and inspiring. I think you would be at the top of the list as runner of the year, you had a really awesome year. I'm really looking forward to watching you and your wife tear it up in 2014.

From Trevor Baker on Thu, Jan 02, 2014 at 19:56:37 from 174.27.217.74

you should try and do the money runner award... as in who made the most $$ racing this summer? haha hard to sum up but it'd be interesting haha.

From allie on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 10:04:53 from 174.23.134.136

i am not disagreeing with your picks, but i think devra v. deserves a shout-out -- she ran three sub-2:50 marathons in 2013 (two of those were overall wins). 2:48:21 at ogden, 2:47:57 at TOU, 2:47:10 at huntsville. the huntsville performance was especially good considering it was just one week after TOU. i'm not sure there is another female runner in UT who could pull that off.

From RileyCook on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 10:13:50 from 73.52.134.194

Allie, that's a great point. I hadn't really thought of Huntsville. I mostly looked at the major races. But that is an incredible feat two weeks in row! As I mentioned I was a little less in the know on the women's picks and was likely to miss a person or performance.

From Dave Olson on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 10:32:34 from 98.202.58.72

This is fun I almost want to start a Poll and link it here and let people vote! Kinda make it the FRB Annual Awards. It would be really fun IMO.

From Trevor Baker on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 10:38:33 from 155.98.164.38

Come to think of it, Josh McCabe prob also deserves to be mentioned with a debut of 66:43 in the half running 30-50 mpw... and a 14:15 5k on the track in early May. didn't run enough big races to really deserve the Riley Award though. ;-)

From Dave Olson on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 11:30:55 from 98.202.58.72

The nerd in me couldn't help myself. Just a few categories on a survey for fun and I made it so if you write someone in they are saved as a selection for future voters. Have fun! I am not overly knowledgeable about everyone, so if someone is left off please I meant no offense.

Trevor, I gave the shout out to Josh. I was actually going to do a "rookie" of the year for best runner new to Utah road racing. This would've been close between josh and zak. But I forgot to add it, plus I was clueless who to give the female rookie to.

Dave that's cool. I will have to go over and vote. Though I kind of already did by posting this. Post your link on the discussion forum and you may get more hits than posting it on my comment section. Although now I have to see zero votes next to my name haha.

From Trevor Baker on Fri, Jan 03, 2014 at 12:53:16 from 155.98.164.38

just remembered this too... Kodi Kleven (2013) – 1:12:55 provo city half. def could be the rookie of the year / fastest female on the roads....
