No run. I went and saw Dr. Matt Poulsen at his Draper location today and he gave me a cortisone shot. We're hoping that I can resume some light running late next week. We feared it may be a meniscus tear at first, but after examining my knee he thinks it's most likely IT Band Syndrome, although the meniscus was a little swollen as well and there's still a small chance it's the culprit. But for now we held off on an MRI and I'll do lots of stretching (boo), rolling (boo), icing, resting, etc. If after a week and a half I haven't seen any improvement we'll do the MRI and check for a tear. But it's not the same knee injury I had all of Feb and into the marathon. That (what I assume was tendonitits) was inner knee and is gone gone gone, not to mention is was much much less painful than this. This new pain started two weeks ago 15 miles into a run with a step where my knee gave out/buckled.

Matt is a great guy and a very professional doctor. I'd recommend him to anyone on here who needs similar help. It's always nice to see someone who knows how much you train and what makes you tick as a runner when you get injured, someone who thinks like you. Thanks again Matt.

So short-term goal is to limit ice cream intake from injury depression as much as possible so as to not gain too much weight.

Matt is the best health care provider I've ever associated with. There are many great docs, but there's something different about the way he treats you. He does business with sound ethics and lives by great principles. Glad he was able to help you as well. Wishing you a fast and quick recovery.

I agree that Matt is the one of the best doctors I've seen.

I hope that the cortisone shot helps. IT band syndrome is often caused by weak hips...you might want to consider adding some clam shells, monster walks, donkey kicks, bridges, etc. into your rehab to help expedite recovery.

Good to hear, Riley. You are fortunate to have someone like Matt. Every time I go to the trainer it feels like an interrogation. It's quite something to go to someone who knows you and knows your training.

You'll be back before you know it. In the meantime, enjoy your ice cream; your earned it!

My wife was excited about seeing him for her messed up shoulder but, sadly, he's out of our network. I just love our system.

From Matt Poulsen on Wed, Apr 02, 2014 at 22:12:41 from 50.168.224.197

Sure hope you get feeling better soon, Riley!

Thanks for the kind words guys. You are too kind.

Rob, I hadn't heard that. Today, I asked my assistant about that. She said she told your wife, when she called, that I am a provider for your insurance. Perhaps the insurance website or phone system hadn't yet updated their system when your wife checked. If you let me know your insurance, I'm happy to look into it myself. I'm a provider for almost all insurances. And, worse case, if in the small chance I'm not a provider for your insurance, I'm still happy to see her -- and I'd make sure she wasn't charged any more than if I was a provider.

Good luck with that short term goal.:)

I was plagued with ITBS for quite a while in 2012 and it was completely miserable. The one thing I learned is like Andrea adressed...hip strengthening (and scraping) really does expidite recovery.

This is basically what I used and I got through my injury in about a month.

A couple of things to note....I tried the elliptical because I'm a cardio pheen and I'm pretty sure it made the injury worse. Also I found that running slow irritated it more than running fast.

Thanks everyone.

Andrea and Rachelle, I will have to try some of those hip strengthening exercises. Thanks for the heads up. Also good to know elliptical irritated yours Rachelle. I haven't tried any cross training and don't plan on doing any. I figure if running isn't good for my injury how can cycling or elliptical be much better. If I'm going to lose fitness by laying off, I'm going to heal completely and give my body 100% time off. But I know most people like to cross train to maintain some fitness. I feel the minimal fitness maintained doesn't outweigh potential setbacks, but that's just me.

So frustrating! I'm glad you were able to get a great marathon in before the setback! I know you'll be back!

Sorry about the knee man. Sounds like you're in good hands. I've heard good things about that Matt guy!

I have to admit I got a little sick when I read about your knee buckling. That just makes me cringe.

Get well soon!
