UTAH MARATHON

If anyone is ever tempted to run two marathons on successive Saturdays, I would advise against it :-)

My thoughts on this race are, "Wow, that hurt!"

I ran or rather jogged this marathon to improve my position in the USATF circuit and I did end up gaining quite a few points, so mission accomplished.

The course was a nasty bugger!  Gradual climbing for first 18 or so miles and then bombing downhill the last 6 or so, but  I couldn't use it because my legs were completely shot.

Ben ran the first five miles with me before he had to use the restroom, after that it was a solo long distance run around Salt Lake.  My legs held up reasonably well until 16 and at that point I knew it was going to be a grind to finish.  I got passed right around this point by a guy I had passed three miles earlier.

The last eight miles were extremely painful but I grinded it out and somehow finished.  And I actually think 2:51 on this beast of a course one week after a marathon is respectable.

If you care to see my slow splits you can follow the garmin link:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/233051168

The garmin claims it was 1700 feet of climbing and I'm not sure how accurate that is but it may be close; at least it seemed like that much with the constant climbing followed by the constant ups and downs.

And for my troubles and placing 3rd overall I got a sweet medal that looks exactly like my finisher's medal...gee thanks; that's awfully generous of you!

2:51 is really good on that course, a week after StG! Honestly, I figured it would be impressive to just dip under 3 hours.

I'm pretty sure that 3rd place medal has a slightly different ribbon! :-)

What?! You just did what?!....Another [extremely tough] marathon a week after SGM! And a 2:51!?...You're nuts man! But that's awesome. Super impressive time for that course. Fritz and I rode our bikes down 4500 S. today and I was thinking to myself how miserable it would be to race up it. Great job on 3rd place. Congrats!

Justin, I am nuts! That freaking hurt. But it's over now and I'm going to actually take some time to recover now...finally. Too bad you and Fritz didn't see me, you could've paced me on your bikes and laughed at how stupid I am :)

Jake, I confess it does have a different color ribbon. Aren't they contractually obligated to pay top three when they sign up to be a race on the circuit? The only reason I broke 3 hours is that I was scared Steve Anderson would pass me and knock me down a circuit spot and the whole thing would've been in vain! Well it still may be, depending on how things play out next week. Either way, I'm not racing next week, I'm done.

I thought you were a middle distance specialist - you've run 4 marathons this year!!!

You know - I wasn't involved w/ USATF when they made this deal w/ the Utah Marathon... so I never saw the contract, but yeah, usually the contract would say that they have to pay 3 deep (or give prizes that are of equal or greater value than $100-75-50). And give master's prizes.

I figured they were just going 3 deep on the marathon, and skipping prizes on the half/5K. But it sounds like only the winner of each race got anything (headphones). I'll bring this up w/ the USATF board - I'm happy that this race was added since it was such a slim calendar this year, but I'm not going to let them come back on next year unless they pay the prize money they agree to.

Anyways, I'm impressed that you could even do what you did today. I have no desire to run more than 13 miles yet, and my marathon was 4 weeks ago! And I love high mileage!

I thought I saw you run past my window at about mile 2.25 (I was the guy in underwear eating breakfast in front of the TV), but then thought "no way." At the 5k race Ken confirmed the sighting. You're nuts, but congratulations!

You'd think Ragnar could pony up some prize money for the top three. They must have banked over a million on the Wasatch Back alone. Stingy.

I'm slow to echo the previous words but... what the &*^% were thinking?:) Wow is all I can say.

Great job a week after STG.
